POSITION: Research Specialist (Library Specialist II - Band 4; Position #00040)

DESCRIPTION: The Archives Research & Information Services Division at the Library of Virginia is seeking an experienced Research Specialist. The qualified candidate would provide direct services to the general public, state and local government officials, and local, national and international media and academic and specialized researchers and correspondents by interpreting, evaluating and analyzing their research needs by applying knowledge of Virginia history and government, historiography, and the holdings of the archives in order to guide, direct, instruct or provide the information necessary to answer inquiries and to make the archival records of the Commonwealth available for use.

QUALIFICATIONS: Degree in US History, American Studies, Library Science or a related field required with an emphasis in archival administration or Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA) certification. Master's Degree preferred. Considerable experience in an archives, manuscripts repository, or special collections department of a major research library with emphasis on public service is desirable. Considerable knowledge of Virginia & US History and Government. Considerable knowledge of historical and genealogical research methodology; archival theory and practice and cartographic research methodology. Excellent written, verbal and listening skills. DESCRIPTION: Help us chart the course for Reference and Training at Pamunkey Regional Library as a member of our 5-person department. PRL is a fast-growing suburban/rural four-county regional public library system with ten branches in beautiful Central Virginia. We seek an enthusiastic and tech-savvy Librarian with fresh ideas for incorporating new information technologies into our reference services and workshops to join our team.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Resources Management, this librarian explores, coordinates, and implements digital information services initiatives for Dahlgren Memorial Library [DML]. This librarian is responsible for DML's website, including design and content creation, maintenance, troubleshooting and coordination of necessary re-design planning. Primary responsibility for the integration of Web 2.0 applications, social networking tools, digital instruction / learning modules, and DML's digital collections to enhance the library's web presence, current library services and the use of digital solutions across the functional areas of the library. Assists in the implementation and coordination of DML's usability testing program and digital reference service [online collaboration with end-users] including but not limited to use of instant messaging, blogs, wikis, RSS feeds and other emergent technologies to build and coordinate web-based tools for users, including knowledge paths, digital learning objects, downloadable resources, links to medical and medical education websites, practice questions for medical exams, medical algorithms, and medical calculators. Responsible for monitoring and educating the DML staff about ongoing development in harvesting technologies and increased network technologies, emerging library "finding tools" and innovative technology approaches at other medical libraries. In addition, this librarian works on integrating licensed electronic content into GUMC Blackboard classes, participates in library committees, and provides digital reference to GUMC faculty, students, researchers, and staff. Represents DML on and works with the School of Medicine web design and development team efforts.

This position reports to the Assistant Director for Resources Management. In addition, the librarian will have reporting responsibilities, when appropriate, to Library committees, teams, task forces and ad hoc / collaborative working groups.

REQUIREMENTS: Required: Master's degree from ALA accredited MLS graduate program. Experience using and knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, office applications, and Internet applications (including Web and e-mail clients) as well as database creation and graphics manipulation and software. Experience and knowledge of web content management and publication; including website management using HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), JavaScript, and XML as well as Web 2.0 applications and social networking tools. Familiarity with current and emerging web technologies, and website design principles and practices. The Library Systems Coordinator provides user support and training, performs initial assessment and research on a variety of issues, and resolves a wide range of technological problems, often of the highest complexity, for a diverse constituency of library users, both in-house and remote.

The Library Systems Coordinator serves as the primary Voyager system liaison between the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) and Gelman Library, working with WRLC and Ex-Libris to develop outputs and reports that meet stated library needs and to improve planning and workflows. The LSC also provides library support for other products including, but not limited to, SFX, Metalib, 360 Resource Manager, and Archivists' Toolkit.

The LSC participates in library planning, serves on library, Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) and University-wide committees, task forces, and teams.

Gelman librarians are expected to be active professionally, to contribute to developments in the field, and to perform additional duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: An ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or its equivalent. Three years of relevant experience in a library, museum, archive or information center. Demonstrated ability to formally manage projects ensuring best use of library staff resources, adherence to library priorities. Experience in administering, integrating, and troubleshooting library electronic resources ,specialized library applications and systems such as Integrated Library Systems, OpenURL resolvers, federated search engines, hardware, authentication and security systems, and various licensed products such as SFX and ERM systems. One year programming experience in XML, XSLT, etc. One year experience or coursework in SQL and database development. Demonstrated on-the-job familiarity with Unix/Linux environment. DESCRIPTION: George Mason University Libraries is seeking a creative, collaborative librarian to lead the interlibrary loan and document delivery department. Manages all aspects of borrowing, lending, record-keeping, and delivery of materials from all sources, including George Mason University’s reciprocal partners in the Washington Research Library Consortium, the Virtual Library of Virginia, the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, and others.
